City Chase: The Rules Empty City Chase: The Rules

Post  Admin Sun Jan 29, 2012 3:38 pm

    Welcome to City Chase!

This is a dynamic information gathering and deduction game that takes place downtown over a period of around two weeks. The object of the game is to be the first to discover who among you is a dirty rotten spy (or, if you ARE the dirty rotten spy, to conceal that information from the dirty rotten detectives).

The rules are designed to allow as much freedom as possible on the part of the players, so that they may employ any means they see fit for gathering information.

The game is also designed to encourage competition among detectives and avoid sharing of information.

    Beginning the game
The game is played by five players and one moderator. It is possible, however, to play with more than five.

The moderator will contact all of the players to set up a meeting place and time to discuss game specific details. When all players meet with the moderator the general rules are explained, then the players will meet one at a time in private with the game moderator, who will give them their player information.

Player information tells you who you are in the game, what your role is, and gives you your username and password for use on this forum.

The player information you receive is private and necessary to play the game so don't lose it and don't let anybody else see it.

The moderator will also give one player an envelope with the username and password for a special account which will have useful game information.

    Game Length and Requirements
The game takes place over the course of several days.

Each phase has a time limit which will be expressed by the game moderator during the first meeting. If any player feels they need more time they can contact the game moderator to ask for an extension. The moderator may accept, decline, or put it to a player vote via the forum.

Each phase expects an action from players, although not every player must act in every phase. In every foreseeable scenario only two players will be required to act per phase, and only one player must act more than twice in the entire game.

    Sending Away for Investigation
Certain times throughout the game each player will have the opportunity to take an action called "sending away" for investigation. This is an opportunity to gather otherwise difficult-to-obtain information from the moderator.

You simply send a message to the moderator asking a question about the other players, and the moderator will send the information to a special account which players will eventually have access to.

Rules for asking questions are as follows:

You may ask about three players, ie "John, Matt, and Perrin"
    OR
You may ask about three user names, ie "Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, and Mr. Pink"

If you ask about three players you are asking if they correspond to a username.
"Are either John, Matt, or Perrin Mr. Blue?"

If you ask about three user names you are asking what role they play.
"Are either Mr. Blue, Mr. Green, or Mr. Pink the spy?"

There are five user names (Mr. Blue, Mr. Red, Mr. Green, Mr. Pink, and Mr. Yellow), and five roles (Spy, Detective 1 - 4).

You may only ask this question if you have the special envelope in your possession, and only one question can be asked per player (with one exception as explained later).

    Playing the Game
After the initial meeting and once every player has obtained their player information from the game moderator the game has begun. Even before you leave each other you may probe for information about user names, roles, business schedules, phone numbers, or anything else you may consider to be useful information.

All players will know their role (spy, detective 1, etc), their username (Mr. Green, Mr. Blue, etc), and the password for their username.

Detective 1 will also have a special envelope, given to him/her by the game moderator, which will have a special username and the password to that account. This is the account which will have information obtained through sending away for investigation. Only detective 1 has the password at the beginning of the game.

Now detective 1 must send away for investigation once.
After he has done so he must place the envelope in a hidden location downtown. There are borders in which the envelope must be placed, details later.
When the envelope is placed downtown, detective 1 sends a message to the game moderator giving detailed directions for obtaining the envelope.

The moderator will send the directions to the spy, at which point it is now the spy's responsibility to retrieve the envelope. When he does so, he must send away for investigation once.
The spy then sends to another player a "black dot" in an envelope addressed to them. "Black dotting" a player is calling them out, and they must respond.
If the receiver of the black dot is detective 1, this phase is over and detective 1 reveals his/herself publicly as the original recipient of the envelope.
If they are not detective 1, they simply reveal publicly that they are not detective 1. In that case, the spy MUST send away for investigation again, then they may send out another black dot. This continues until detective 1 has been revealed.

Next, detective 2 sends a message to the game moderator with details on a meeting place (downtown) and meeting time. The moderator sends this information to the spy. If need be, the moderator may act as mediation between detective 2 and the spy until an agreement can be reached.
This meeting must be human to human, in person with the moderator present. However, the two humans need not be the detective and the spy, or even players (in the spy's case, he/she'll likely want somebody nobody else knows).
At the meeting, the special envelope will pass to detective 2.

Now detective two must send away for investigation once.

Detective 3 sets up a meeting with detective 2 through the moderator, same rules apply.

Once detective 3 has the envelope, he/she must send away for investigation once.

Finally, detective 4 sets up for the meeting with detective 3, acquires the envelope, and must send away for investigation.

At this point, all players have access to all investigation information on that account. Each player then posts one final question on these forums in a "yes/no" poll format, then votes on all the other questions. The highest voted question is sent away for investigation to be answered by the game moderator. In the event of any ties, the game moderator may pick from the tied questions at random.

Detectives may send a message to the game moderator at any time during the game accusing another player of being the spy, but you only have one attempt.

At the end of the game, all of the players will meet up with the game moderator. At this time, any detectives who sent an accusation must pay the agreed upon wager. After all transactions have been made, the game moderator reveals the results of the game!
